Credible

Sacrifices

On June 6, 1944 – Mitch McConnell in NYT:

‘Eighty years ago, America and our allies fought because we had to. The forces assembled on the English Channel on June 6, 1944, represented the fruits of many months of feverish planning. And once victory was secure, the United States led the formation of the alliances that have underpinned Western peace and security ever since.
Today, the better part of valor is to build credible defenses before they are necessary and demonstrate American leadership before it is doubted any further.’

It should be noted that the US entered the war after Pearl Harbor in December 1941. This is not to diminish the sacrifices made by the US, even though compared to the more than eight million dead Russian soldiers the American sacrifices are much smaller.

And nothing wrong with credible defenses, but June 6, 1944 was not about credible defenses. Negotiations with Nazism were not possible, it could be only be totally defeated, destroyed.

I’m not sure if this concept is possible today with nuclear weapons here and there, and even when it comes to Hamas there is no military solution.

But the fact that Western Europe let the US handle all military things after 1945 turned out to be a fairly good thing. Till now at least.
