On the new leader - Zvi Bar'el in Haaretz:

‘From the outset of the Gaza war, Sinwar regarded Haniyeh's a mere "messenger boy," the man in a suit whose job it is to relay messages from Gaza to the mediators and relay their answers back. Haniyeh could neither impose his will on Sinwar nor determine the course of the war, its scope or the conditions for ending it. Haniyeh was treated like a statesman who maintained relations with heads of state, but he had no control over Hamas' military.
However, Haniyeh held one particularly important strategic asset: he controlled the organization's financing mechanisms and business empire. Sinwar still has an army – or at least a militia that continues to wage war – but he is not a statesman. And in order to manage Hamas' financial and other operations, he will rely on the people and mechanisms that deal with it today and provide the money lifeline to Sinwar and his people.
The imperatives that led to his appointment as the head of the organization, to ensure the movement's future politically and financially, may now be much more significant than the military pressure exerted on Gaza. They indeed may become the central factor in the decisions Sinwar makes concerning a deal on the hostages and the cease-fire.’

The movement will survive, Israel will make sure it does, willingly or unwillingly.

The extrajudicial assassinations have little or no effect on the movement’s future, history taught us.

The question why the financial operations of the movement are not interrupted remains interesting. Impossible, or undesirable?

Despite all the talk, Netanyahu prefers Gaza with Hamas, a Gaza without Hamas might be worse for him and his alies.
